A brief explanation

I've had a few people ask me about the Fire and Flood comment I made on Facebook so here's the explanation:

Somewhere around the end of September,  beginning of October the toilet over flowed twice in one week. So Mike was going to spend his day off that Thursday tearing out the old nasty carpet and putting in tile. (which is why you see all our personal bathroom stuff lining the wall of the bedroom.) While he was tiling he kept smelling smoke but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. A while later the ceiling light in our bedroom exploded all over the bed!

He pulled the rest of the fixture out of the ceiling and noticed that the 2x6's the fixture was attached to were smoldering and as soon as the air hit the smoldering wood, it caught fire! So, he frantically looked for a spray bottle and was able to get the flames out. He then proceeded to cut a hole in our ceiling two feet wide and 4 feet long. Then he cut out all the burnt wood and pulled out the brand new insulation we just had blown into the attic.

It's been 2 months of living in our sons’ empty room while we (mostly he) found time to work on the room.

The smoke smell is finally gone and we now have a beautiful new bedroom...

and Bathroom

...that I really hope our insurance is going to cover. I'm crossing my fingers.

I don't know...I need to step away from the computer. Physically and mentally. I use it at work AND at home. I order food, find addresses, make spreadsheets and notices, check email, send email, toss email in the junk folder, Pay bills, blog , facebook, Organize pictures, order pictures, Shop, listen to music, lalalalalalalalala...

I know it's not just me, it's probably every ones story. It's just not working for me right now. It's time to cut some stuff out.

If I'm feeling overwhelmed that I haven't updated my blog...that's a little crazy making! On the list of "to do's"...it 113th in importance.

In Shellyland it's not, but in reality, it is...113th.

Maybe in January I'll have some time, maybe for Christmas I'll get a big Family Pack of ADD medication and I'll be able get my brain in order, be more organized. It's a HUGE struggle, it makes me feel stupid. Literally lacking in intelligence.

So give me some time to scrape myself off the wall I've hit and maybe I'll be ready to go at it again in January! Yeah!

Just something I noticed

I was down in the basement just now folding laundry when I looked up through the window and saw a little boy sitting on my front porch. I don't know who he was, but he was there, sitting... and looking at my pumpkins. I was intrigued; I had to see what his plan was, sitting on a strangers front porch.

So I quietly climbed the stairs to the family room, wishing that my camera hadn't been left in the trunk of the car,

and I watched...
...just out of his sight, like you might if you were watching a cute little squirrel in the mountains playing on a rock. He stood up and wandered over to the bails of straw with black "birds" all over them and petted a crow, as he looked around.
Then, he went back over to the porch and beat on each and ever pumpkin and gourd he saw.
In the other corner of the yard was my very favorite witch, a few cats and a scarecrow and he weaved his way through that.
I could see that he was just about done...he had touched, and pounded, and petted till there was nothing more to do.

And as he walked away he did a little boy dance; wiggling across the lawn, off to where ever he came from...and I smiled...and giggled a little,

Because...

That's why I do this Halloween thing every year; it's whimsy, it's art, it's fun, And it's moments like this that make me feel like I've done something good to make some one's day a little more fun!

What a trip! Or…What the @#%% is in my hot tub water?

We left Thursday for St. George to pick up Brett’s car; we brought it down in May some time to store in Larry and Ann’s Garage because we didn’t have room at our house and we figured Ann and Larry could use it while they were staying there. Things have changed and we needed to bring it home. We brought Nate and his friend Marcus Renlund with us so they could drive the car home.

It was a fun mini vacation! And we enjoyed having the boys hang out with us. They were great!

Thursday we stopped at McDonald’s for lunch. (Burger) we got into Washington that night and had In & Out (Another Burger) and then we made it into St. George and went to bed.

Friday we planned to meet up with my parents for lunch at Café Rio but decided to drive out to Diamond Valley to surprise them first and see what they’ve been working on lately
(what the heck, we weren’t in any hurry.)
So the guys checked out Jerald’s super cool 50’s vintage boat while Mom and I wandered the garden and talked. After about 30 minutes we headed down the volcano dotted mountain back to St. George to eat.

When we got to Café Rio we realized that 1pm was STILL not late enough to miss the lunch rush! I didn’t think Jerald would live long enough to get to the front of the line to place his order so we headed to Nate and Marc’s restaurant choice…Iceberg…a burger joint…because I
just haven’t had enough greasy burger in my diet lately! So as flies swarmed around my sweeties head I ate my foot long HOTDOG… still greasy, but not a (burger)! It was good to see my Parents again, if only for an hour or so. (I’ll see mom next month at Stacy and Jeff’s when the baby is born. Yea! It’s not me giving birth! (I digress)

The boys left after that to hang with Drew, who was also in town with his family so Mike and I went back to the house for a nap. The boys came home and I made dinner. (You can only eat out so much honestly!) By the way, if you ever want to embarrass your teen, sing really loud with the music playing in the grocery store. It’s the  best!

Saturday, we had breakfast at Denny’s before heading to snow canyon.
Denny’s…I don’t even know where to begin. It’s Denny’s. While we waited for a table this young family came in. The mother needing a smoke before breakfast and she made some kind of threatening comment to one of her children using the F word…I missed it, Mike didn’t. Ignorance is bliss.
We were seated and our waitress Susan came to take our drink order. Drinks came back and
she took our food order. Sounds boring huh? Yeah…wait. While she was gone Mark noticed
that his Sprite didn’t taste like Sprite. So she brought his new drink and said, “I tasted it myself, this glass is good!” um…WHAT?! Did she drink out of Mark's glass?

Mark Likes Susan.
He said he was going to tip her well.

OK. Our meal came and I noticed that I didn’t get bacon AND sausage, just bacon. Mark had sausage and didn’t order it! When I asked Susan about it she said what any good mom would say as she waved her hand around, “just switch the meats.” And she walked away…and laughter ensued.
So we “switched our meats” and ate our meals and I tied a few cherry stems with my tongue. Then I got a really good look at Nate’s breakfast. I have pictured it here. Razzdango Soda, (he liked saying that…a lot) 4 Large pancakes, 2 slices of toast and a plate of hash browns. I think Susan may have had a thing for Nate because, look at the mountain of butter on the side of that kids cakes! Or, maybe she wished him some clogged arteries, we may never know.

He ate it all…MAJOR CARB OVERLOAD. I was concerned…concerned that he may drift into a coma soon. I’m happy to say, he’s still alive or this could have been a very different post.

Fat and full we headed toward Snow Canyon.

We got a little lost so we went to the Tuacahn Amphitheatre first. The boys were not impressed, so Mike took a much welcomed potty break and we moved on.

In hindsight we are grateful that our route was switched, for as we drove we received a phone call that we almost didn’t answer, because the phone number was strange…it was very long. Nate and Mark begged us to answer it and Mike and I were so grateful that I did.

It was our missionary, Brett.

Brett and his new companion were hit by a car on Friday night. They spent 9 hours in a hospital waiting room…in Spain. They were walking home Friday night and crossed the street. One lane of traffic stopped for them, one did not. The car (just a fiat, in Brett’s words) hit his companion first, his head busting the windshield, his body then hitting Brett which twisted Brett’s ankle as they flew away from the car. (READ HIS LETTER) As I’m listening to this I’m trying not to cry…Brett and Mike are laughing… because it could have been so much worse. The mission Pres. and his WIFE (her letter) just happened to be in town (in the farthest reaches of the mission) for Zone Conference and were with our boy. We felt so good knowing he had them there to take care of him. Pres. DuVall got on the phone and told us that the boys would be fine….pretty bruised up but fine. He reminded us that the angels were with these boys that night. They walked away from the accident.

They walked away.

It could have been so bad. But they were saved. They have work to do. So we hung up with thank you’s and I love you’s and went on our way.

Snow Canyon was pretty; we didn’t get out but took a lot of pictures out the window.

We went back to the house, packed up and Mike and I headed to Mesquite for the night.

The hotel room was nice, with a Jacuzzi in the main part of the room. We drove around the town for an hour or so, went into two of the 4 casinos in Mesquite to check out our dinner options and came to the same conclusion… subway, eaten in the hotel room would be the best choice that night!

So, we’re sitting in the Jacuzzi, watching TV. HELLOOOOO! It almost makes me want my own hot tub at home…almost. We finally poured ourselves out of the tub and began to drain it when I notice something…floating…WAIT…lots of something!… floating in the tub!
Black flakes large and small…floating and whirling around in the same water my unclothed body was just in…for at least a half hour!

All I could do was laugh…at that point what more could I do but head to the local Wal-Mart and buy (you might want to go to your Happy place for this) Feminine Internal Cleanser. Uhuh…you know what I’m talkin’ about. There was no way I wasn’t going to try to get ride of whatever that was in the tub that MIGHT have found its way into
 unacceptable territory!

The poor guy at the front desk of the hotel had to hear all about it because the female manager was at home at this point. He was so sweet about it….poor thing…I probably ruined him for life! (That’s what I do best though) He called the manager at home and I told her the story again at what point I told her what I thought she should do about it (give me the room for free)  to which she just acted as if this wasn’t an issue. Maybe she doesn’t mind black floating things all up in her business…I don’t know.

Anyway…I think I’m going to live, although Mike was a bit shaken up over it, more so then the whole Brett getting hit by a car thing. Go figure.

Patti didn’t give us the room for free but she did take off about a third of the cost. That’ll have to do. I wish I had taken a picture of the complimentary breakfast. They had small pancake shaped eggs (I think they were fake) sausage, and chewy French toast with cheap syrup.
 I laughed again.

I’m writing as Mike drives home and I must say, this weekend was so much fun… fun with my sweetheart and fun with the boys. (Morgan was busy having her own fun with the Girl Scouts in Kanab.)  Lots of laughter and relaxation. Great idea Bud; turning a boring trip to pick up a car into a mini VACA we’ll never forget!

Morgan called it Bonding...

My Mother says,
"It's a good thing you're Pretty Shelly!"
What? Is there something wrong with these shots? Do I have a zit? Is  my hair out of place?
Morgan thought we needed some bonding time tonight. I was gone most of the afternoon and evening; weight training, and back to work for a meeting, McDonald's Happy Meals for dinner at almost 9 o' clock. Yea...I'm feelin' it tonight.
But my baby needed some time...time to be goofy with me, and I haven't let myself be goofy enough these days, so yes, this old woman needed it too.

In other news,
Morgan went to the Temple for the first time yesterday to do Baptisms, so I asked to tag along. I was there the first time Beth went, and I teared up a little bit then too.

My kids...they're growing up and doing big kid stuff... and almost adult stuff... and Brett...well, he's doing AMAZING stuff with the people of Spain. He comes closer and closer to becoming the man we know he can be, with every week that passes; with every letter we receive.

They're growing up faster then I can keep up with, and my thought...when I really think about it  is, "Have I been a good enough parent, that when they DO. GROW. UP. will they want me as their friend?" I hope so. Because I love every. single. one. of them with every part of me and after all the "Parenting" garbage that has had to be done, I really just want to be the Mom they want to hang out with and laugh with; really hard laughter, like when I'm with my Sister Stacy and My Mom. Oh yea...you know what I'm talkin' about.

I want that!

Meet the Patch Family

Back in August we went on a hike. A few days later the Patches' took me back up the mountain for a photo shoot. I don't know about them, but I had so much fun! I'm not a photographer, I don't know what all the bells and whistles do one my awesome camera, but Chris and Monica trusted me enough to spend an evening with them; swatting mosquitoes and walking off the "Designated Path" to try and get some pictures they might like.

Go to the Slide show to the right to see my other shots. (Chris may have a few in there too. Gotta give the man his props!)

These people are way to cute for their own good...and I think Will knows that.

...and that's dangerous.

I don't know how it happened...

Mike and I had this discussion the other night about how NOT popular we were in High School. I'm assuming Suzy; Nate's Mother wasn't super popular either but I can't confirm that. So we are amazed every time our kids get asked to a dance! Mike and I were never lucky that way.

This is how Laura answered Nate's Invite to Homecoming.
Cheese Pizza with M & M's that spell out
"HECK YEA!"
( Chocolate and garlic...not a good combination)

the Perks of having a Dad with a car dealership
Honda S2000 Convertible
and I must say right here that I think it was very thoughtful of her to wear flats to homecoming. It may not look like it because Nate is standing "uphill" But she is the same height as Nate! Even a pump would have kicked her head above his!
Well, MISTER POPULAR had himself a bit of a problem the other night when
Jenna asked him to MORP (prom spelled Backwards)
and then 20 minutes later...
Emma asked him to MORP!
So, Nate did the sweet thing and accepted the invite from Jenna because she asked first, even though he really wanted to go with Emma, and I got some lovely pumpkins to decorate my front yard with!

Thank you Emma    :)

Because of her...

...I'm feeling a little older.
...I'm feeling the end of parenthood coming faster then I want it to.
...I need to be a better Mom then ever...because she's my last    chance to do it right.
...I laugh.
...I want to be the best everything I can be.
...I worry.
...I remember what it was like to be 12 years old!

Rock Candy, M & M's, Sour Gummy Bears, and cute flowery Lolly Pops!

State Fair...Again

I'm kind of hoping that I'll feel comfortable letting Morgan and her friends go ALONE next year. I don't know why I didn't enjoy myself as much this time around. I was feeling a little anxiety I guess. Lots of walking and people. The only things that were different were the butter bull, which was actually a Rockettes style line up of cartoon farm animals this time, and the other was the fact that I put 3 pictures in the Photography Contest!
Halls of the Hoover Dam, Mikey, If you look closely you can see me, reflected in his glasses, and Chris Patch at Lake Powell. I didn't win but it was good for me to try.
We did the perfunctory "Sitting on the curb" where Morgan split her head open when she was 4 years old.

Then we wandered and looked at the animals and crafts. We ate the MOST EXPENSIVE FOOT LONG HOT DOGS EVER! We went to the rodeo for a few minutes and watched a little Team Roping and Mutton Bustin'.
You can if you'd like, double click on the slideshow to the right and see the other pictures from the day and even make a comment on the pictures I believe.

Sunday, Rainy Sunday

To see this picture; taken at 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon you'd
never know there was a storm on the way.
(the bee picture's for you MOM!)
But yea...it showed up around 6:00 p.m.
And Morgan made excellent use of her time playing in the rain, and heaven forbid I don't get pictures of EVERYTHING she does! She IS super cute in these shots, she can't help it.

This is the comment my sweet friend Kristen left on my facebook account about her memory of me in the rain:

Let the Fantasy Football Begin!!

,
John, John...always finding new ways to keep my husband busy. Seriously! What if Mike actually WINS this year? What do I do with that very large Trophy? It doesn't match...or blend
in, with anything in my house! You know how anal retentive I am about that!!!! LOL

Sunday was Draft Pick night. I forgot just how long it takes for...what is it? 10 men (and I use that word loosely because Julie and some boys are playing this year) to pick 14 players!!! My imaginary money is on Julie for two reasons. 1) She's been doing this for years on her family league and two...I think the trophy would look beautiful at the newly remodeled Hammond home. :)

What a sweet way to celebrate...

Thursday night Mike and I went with his parents, Larry and Ann, and his siblings and their spouses to the Jordan River Temple to do sealings. It was so nice. What was nice was to have all the Hansons there. We were celebrating 3 Anniversaries in August.

After we left, we went to Kneaders for a little dinner and to stall before going home to our kids. Is that wrong?? :)

Dave and Nancy Wood, Scott and Stacie Hanson, Married 17 years, Larry and Ann Hanson, Married 48 years, Trevor and Robyn Hanson, Married 13 years and Mike and I,  just happy to be here!

What is it...August? Already?

I'm on the back end of Summer and this is my first hike of the year I think! Loser. It's crazy, I used to do this stuff all the time. So here we are; my husband my kids and I with a few of our friends up Mill Creek Canyon headin' to Dog Lake. What?...What do you mean that's not my husband? uhhh, yea that's my husb- oh wait...your right, Dang! that's not my husband. That's Julie's husband, John and their son Jake. My bad.

Anyway does anyone notice the no parking sign to my left? So I guess you can't park on the road but we can stand in the middle of it and block the cars so we can take a picture. Yea that's safe...
This is pretty much what Lily Patch looked like the entire time. Not real happy to be there.
But I was very impressed at the lack of whining! She did a great job
for a kid who didn't want to be there.
Pretty picture. I like the sunlight and the tree to the left with the little love note on it, that I didn't realize was there till I got home and saw it full size. Sometimes I get lucky.
Little Dodger Patch loved this hike. he wanted to be up front all the time, leading the way. I thought for sure he was going to get kicked.
Before we lost the all the good light I got a few flowers. I know I take a ton of these but they never stop being beautiful reminders of the Lords love for us.

The guys ahead of us...
they were, the entire time. I think Caleb had a hot date waiting for his call at home. Whatever! You're 13 man!!!
Emma Patch
Ok, here I am with my family, My Husband Mike and my son Caleb. We made it to Dog Lake; which really isn't much of a lake but a very large pond. But my husband and I were glad to get-what? uhh YEA that is too my husband. He's tall, his name's Mike, I know my own husband! ..........................DANG !!!! Sorry Carrie. Yea...this is Carrie Wagstaff's Husband and son.
Here's the deal...
you people need to come with your spouse's on these hikes! Because even though I'm not a big believer in the idea that situations need to be "appropriate" by certain "standards" It was only slightly odd for Monica and I to go hiking with your husbands yesterday! Don't get me wrong, I'll do it again if I have the opportunity, if it means i'm going hiking again, but I'd sure love to see MY husband there along with Julie, Carrie and Chris.
And really...do you want me to take advantage of this situation again on my blog? really?
AHHHHHHH GOOD TIMES :) hehe
Now I just need to find a shooting range and a motorcycle to ride and I'll feel fulfilled for the summer!
